Chapter 18
Hank walked up Yampa Avenue Thursday afternoon with a bit of lightness to his steps. It felt so good to have finally taken a bath and put on a fresh pair of clothes. He was also going to hire himself a deputy before the end of the day, come what may.
He did, however, wish the mayor would work this entire day, not just in the morning. A ride on his horse along the river would be nice, or a chance to visit friendsâLinda, maybe? He was cleaned up after all, and heâd finally gotten the chance to shave. She didnât like it when he had stubble on his face or smelled like his horse or had a few layers of sweat clinging to his shirt. If they were to get married, sheâd probably make him take a bath every day. In his work, would that even be practical?
The thought stiffened his back.
But the thought of being married soothed that lonely space in his heart, the one that had constantly longed for a family ever since heâd lost his pa, ma, and sister. It would have been nice to have gone to his own home this morning, to have his wife prepare his tub of water in the privacy of their own kitchen. Instead Ma Hewett at the boardinghouse had strung up a line and hung a sheet for his privacy so he could take a bath while she cooked breakfast for the other five boarders. And Ma Hewett wasnât that great for company. Heck, John and Don conversed with him more than she did. But Hank couldnât blame her. She was a widow with a business to run. It was no more her duty to provide him with stimulating conversation than it was his to chitchat with his prisoners.
Still, he talked often with John and Don. He had hopes of them divulging where Forbes was now holed up. He doubted Forbes would stay at the Foster place, not after Rosie had infiltrated the Daltonsâ hideout; heâd gotten that much out of Don. The only thing heâd gotten out of them concerning Forbes was that the man had a hideout that was even harder to find than their grannyâs place.
When Hank walked into the jail, the mayor stood up from the desk, waved his goodbye, and left like he was glad to shed the place. Hank lumbered over to the desk, dropped into his chair, and opened the drawer on the left. He pulled out the applications for the deputy jobâall four of them. It felt like trying to come up with the posse to get Forbes all over again. Heâd really hoped there would have been more interest in the job.
The door opened, and he looked up.
âHank, my boy, are you ready for me to help you go through those applications for deputy?â Zeb Greene sauntered in, his hand hanging in front of his chest in a sling.
âSure am.â Hank motioned for Zeb to take the chair at the side of his desk.
